Babble: the Vest-I-Can't-Afford edition
This week's Sexy 6 and I've made a special babble video. Also! A question!
Hello and thanks for opening me. Sexy 6 in a moment but first, something new. I want to start posting my Babble videos here instead of on Instagram and I’m going to be doing that more and more for the reasons I explain in this video. Let me know in the comments what you think. I will read each one.
And tell a friend about this newsletter - I want to keep it free but that means it will help if you share it. ….. let’s go.
THE SEXY 6: some things I want to pash this week.
1. Velvet Suits
If you’d told me I’d be wearing a pale pink velvet sequinned suit in 2024 I would have laughed at you but here we are. This Joey the Label suit was given to us to wear for the Outloud tour and then I saw it on Kate Langbroek in a shoot. Velvet suits are so cosy and a great formal option in winter.
2. Queer women subverting beauty standards
I’m so bored and exhausted by the same ol’ beauty standards being reinforced by magazines and ad campaigns. I loved these images of two actresses who happen to be queer and happen to be comfortable subverting the male gaze in a way that feels good to them. Yeah, they’re still fashion-thin so that beauty standard remains oppressive and persistent but these images still feel fresher than the usual.
3. Red Mary Janes
I’ve rediscovered Mary Janes in a big way. These mesh ones from Cotton On were my gateway drug (they’re sold out) but there are loads around now including these velvet ones, also from Cotton On for $20.
4. The Best Concealer I’ve Used This Year
I’m in a lifelong search for an under-eye concealer that does the job but won’t fall into cracks. It needs to be fluid. This one is cheaper ($28) than all the exxy one’s I’ve tried and it’s superb. If you want a bit more coverage, Sephora does this one which I also like.
5. This Sequinned Embellished Vest I Will Never Own
I saw this outfit on Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) and did a reverse Google search to hunt it down. Good news: I found it! Bad news: I will never own it because it costs $3400.
Dries Van Noten. Grrrrr. Oh well. I’m inspired by the styling, head-to-toe and will ingest it to spit out a similar outfit one day using things that don’t cost the price of a small car.
6. Business books that are easy to read
Despite co-founding a business 17 years ago, I really struggle with business books of any kind. That’s why I have never been the CEO of Mamamia. But I always want to learn more so a few years ago, I picked up The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and because it’s written like a fable, I read it in one sitting. Didn’t even feel like work. I’ve since read a bunch more and if you’re running a business or working in a business with other people, these are really helpful.
Love love love this is not on Insta. I’m 67 so maybe a bit old school but the way meta etc use algorithms does my head in. In SO many ways!! It’s toxic. Promotes aggression, polarises communities, both local and world wide. When my kids were in high school FB was in its infancy and was essentially true to Mz’s initial intentions, a way for people to connect. Money has corrupted that. I so worrry about my grand children growing up in a world where your bedroom is not a safe place. All hail Wippa!
Let’s not talk about America and their politics. And how that could affect us all. Very scary.
But those are probably not the sort of comments you are looking for. I love that you have found a way to bypass the almighty socials. Please keep it up. Love it!!
PS who needs negativity?? Really? Too many sad people out there that get their kicks from viciously bagging others
You keep doing you. Love it.
I would love it if you could include what brand and name of the make up you’re using as you apply it please 🙏
