Welcome to the Sexy 6 edition of my newsletter where I share with you the six things I want to pash and this week, one thing I deeply regret buying. But first, let’s Babble.
THE SEXY SIX
1. This body butter
I’m usually a body moisturiser/lotion woman but my god. I’d heard about this cult product (female-founded Australian small-business) and gave it a whirl and it’s like my dry winter skin sucked it up like a kitchen sponge. I mix in a squirt of fake-tan every few days and CHEF’S KISS. Lasts for ages. Doesn’t feel greasy. Makes me happy to support small biz instead of my usual big brand, chemist-buys. Little treat for my whole body.
2. This song performed at Glastonbury
Oooph. One of my favourite songs in the world performed with a guest appearanceby Michael J. Fox. Take a moment to watch it if you can. And you can read the story behind it here.
3. This British Lady Who Stole My Look
The wildly intimidating woman on the left is Baroness Fiona Shackleton who is a famous British divorce lawyer, currently in the news because she’s negotiating the 3rd divorce of Princess Diana’s brother, Charles. She is everything, clearly. And I couldn’t help but notice that I own a remarkably similar jacket to the Baroness. Who wore it best? She did. Obviously.
Mine is from Joey the Label and it’s exxy but here are 9 really affordable pieces (including a jacket) recommended by a fashion editor that are worth checking out.
4. The book every woman is reading right now
Sometimes I forget if I’ve already told you about things. You know how you sometimes forget if you heard something or a podcast or a friend told you or…..you dreamt it. Anyway, this book is so good. About a mid-life woman who goes on a brief, wild holiday from her life. It’s sexy and hilarious and totally unexpected and I understand why every woman over 40 (and many under) is currently inhaling it.
5. Bum bags worn cross-body
Bum bags are feminist, when you think about it. I’ve been a bum-bag girl for a long time and for many years I had a gold one which I bought from Typo and wore every single day until it disintegrated. In America, they call them Fanny-Packs which sounds like a tiny backpack for your vagina. I’ve never actually worn them around my waist - let alone on top of my bum - but across my body. They’re just the right size for a phone, a Ventolin, car keys and my migraine drugs. Uniqlo has done these one for $25 which they call (confusingly) ‘round mini shoulder bag’ in tons of different colours. Good for winter.
6. This story (and photo, oh my heart)
If you’re new around here, meet my grandaughter, Luna, whose mother happens to be one of my closest friends and co-host on Mamamia Outloud, Jessie Stephens. There are a lots of things I miss about my kids being little but my god, travelling with them is not one of them. Yes, travelling back from Europe alone on a 26 hour flight with a 1yo is a first world problem. Granted. But holy shit, what fresh hell.
Regrets, I have a few
At the point where my eccentricity meets consumerism, bad things often happen. This week, shoe jewellery became one of them. You can hear how they disrupted a podcast recording here - and how we absolutely lost it.
But also, the bits started to fall off pretty much as soon as I put them on and tried to walk. I sent them back and took a good hard look in the mirror to question the life choices that brought me to the point of wearing foot necklaces. I am suitably chastised.
Mia, I am enjoying your newletter immensley. I turned 65 in May and am questioning a lot about my life. I have never worried about ageing but this year it has bothered me. I feel like I have lost all my confidence. I haven't worked for several years and I am on Jobseeker. I have many health concerns so I can't just do any job, my doctor does not want me to work but Centrelink keep harrassing me and have raised the number of jobs I have to apply for from 4 to 12 per month. It is just a waste of time. But tell me who is going to employ me at 65? It's embarrassing enough that I am on jobseeker (my husband is on Jobseeker too, though he does have a casual job) and wondering whether we will have enough for our retirement, which is 2 and 1/2 years away. You brighten up my weekend with your newsletter. Anyway thanks for all your time and effort. PS Love the pink suit and hairdown
Love the pink suit, def hair down. But the comments at the end about ageing made me laugh, keeping it real Mia!! xx
