Welcome to the Sexy 6 edition of my Babble newsletter where I share with you the six things I want to pash this week.
1. Novelty onesies
I’ve tried so hard to remember where I got this and I can’t. I bought it ages ago when Luna was much smaller and it seemed preposterous to think she would ever be big enough (or cold enough) to wear this but this week was the moment.
2. Pearl Letter Necklace
A few weeks ago when we were in Brisbane for the Outloud live show, I popped into Calexico which is one of my favourite places to shop in all the land. Right outside the change room, the woman with the dark hair exclaimed “Mia!” and dragged her mother out of the change room - they were both going to the Outloud show that night and were doing some mother-daughter shopping. Introductions were made and I forgot everyone’s name immediately. How cool is that grey hair though - one of the most stylish women I’ve seen IRL. I immediately locked eyes on her necklace party, she had the best stack of chains around her neck. It’s really an art to get that right.
Anyway, turns out she owns her own boutique in Rockhampton called Secret Girls Stuff and all the necklaces were from there. Guess what’s around my neck now.
3. How Hollywood made Josh Thomas miserable
The new season of this show has begun with someone I’ve wanted to interview for a long time and this was even better because Clare Stephens is an outstanding and intuitive interviewer so I could just listen and enjoy it. If you’ve ever wondered why the Please Like Me star talks with an American accent (he says it’s related to his autism diagnosis), what really happened when he went to Hollywood and why he came home, get this into your ears.
4. DIY Plane Entertainment
Luna is doing her first long-haul flight next week and if you’ve ever flown anywhere with a 10 month old, you’ll appreciate how Jessie and Luca are feeling about the prospect of that. When Jessie asked Outlouders to suggest how to entertain an infant on a long haul flight, one woman said she attacked toys to a scarf and chucked around her neck and put the baby on her lap.
Immediately, I hyperfocussed on this idea and made one. I bought a cheap loop scarf and some pram toys and probably Luna won’t even care and she will just want to play with the flight-safety sheet. But here I am modelling the ‘party around my neck’ and when she comes back I am totally going to start wearing this to all my meetings.
5. Natalie Harvey, Mamamia’s new CEO
It was a big week at Mamamia as a new CEO took the reigns. My husband and co-founder, Jason Lavigne, is moving up to an Exec Chair role and Nat will now be responsible for the day-to-day of running the business. You can read more about her here.
6. The real-life love story of Colin From Accounts
If you’re a fan of the show (is anyone not?) the origin story of the relationship between it’s creators and co-stars is a treat.
Not At All Sexy …
Algorithms. I detest them. It’s why I started this newsletter and why I increasingly prefer sharing things here instead of on social. It’s been hard to reconcile these past months and weeks the jarring disconnect between the way news stories are discussed between people in real life and the way they spew forth on social media where it often seems like everyone is just screaming at each other. We spoke about that on Mamamia Outloud this week……
Insta-Babble:
I’m going to start including them here in case you missed them (see above point about algorithms). Eventually, I may only post them here instead of Instagram. We’ll see.
As a new Nana I’m taking on board your new stylish necklace for my Sophie
