A few weeks ago, I went to the Logies. You may have heard. I posted about it a lot on my socials and talked about it on Mamam Outloud because, well, I don’t get out much and there’s something about the cheesy, homegrown nature of the Logies … that appeals to everyone over the age of about 25.
Gen Z’s meanwhile probably couldn’t name a single person on that red carpet or locate a commercial tv channel on their TV. If they even have one.
But stop any Australian in the street - no matter their age - and I bet they will have heard of home and away.
There’s no more iconic star of this show than Ada Nicodemou who has played the character of Leah for 24 years, since she was 23 years old. A lot has happened to Leah in that time - can you imagine - soap years are like dog years. Her character has had a few husbands die on her, she’s had many love interests, she’s experienced racism and anxiety and single-parenthood. (list a bunch of things she’s done) .
And in the eight years that actor James Stewart has been playing the role of Justin on Home and Away, their characters have interacted and kind of circled each other until they became romantically involved and then had a big romantic TV wedding earlier this year.
Ada had been married for many years to the father of her 12yo son, Jonas and after they divorced, she was in another long term relationship. Neither of those men were famous and her private life was very much on the downlow.
But after she split with her partner, Chris, a while ago, and James Stewart got divorced, there had been rumours that their on-screen relationship had spilled over to their real life.
So when Ada walked onto the logies stage with James that night a few weeks ago - and they were holding hands, I did a big whoop because this was one helluva hard launch.
The last time I spoke to Ada, 3 years ago, she was still with her long term partner Adam and James was just her co-star.
A lot can change in a woman’s life when she makes some hard choices and puts herself first. And that’s what this conversation is about.
Ada looked more comfortable in her skin than I’d ever seen her when she walked into the studio and I began our conversation by asking how she felt walking onto that stage and effectively announcing to the world, yeah, it’s on……
Listen to how she describes that moment this week on No Filter:
WHAT I WORE THIS WEEK…
WHAT ELSE?
In our regular Friday Best & Worst segment where we talk about our personal high and low moments of the week, I mentioned the photo that has sent me into existential despair……
And you can see it here in the Outlouder newsletter if you want proof…..
Love seeing what you’re wearing Mia and that you’re so frank about the knock off and more budget pieces. Your styling is crazy and inspiring!
